Spirit Ball hoists sails for education

The 5th annual Spirit Ball was held outdoors at the new Mount Pleasant pier facility on Oct. 6 under a gorgeous sky. This gala benefits the South Carolina Maritime Foundation and featured a large silent auction complete with emcee Dave Williams, followed by a live band and Lowcountry supper and a call to support education. Board Chair Teddy Turner made a specific plea to support the Shaw Center, which SCMF has agreed to help the City of Charleston operate, and offered a broader perspective on graduation rates across the Palmetto State. "How many people here tonight ever had any doubts that they would graduate from high school," said Turner. The Spirit of South Carolina tall ship and the SCMF staff have the experience needed to make a difference and Turner hopes that somehow a secret for success can be discovered and duplicated through their outreach programs. Funding remains paramount and a live auction followed Turner's remarks for items like jewelry, sailing trips, gourmet dining and a Lowcountry hunting combo. The near-perfect weather made it easy for the gathering of sailors, philanthropists and maritime enthusiasts to enjoy themselves into the night.
