Gary Player tees off and teammate Jack Nicklaus hits next |
The Southeast continues to shine in the world of
professional golf with the Liberty Mutual Champions Tour event held in Savannah
April 26 – 28.
What used to be
known as the Sr. Tour offers players a chance to team up for golf competition
in Savannah. This is the format that saw Jack Nicklaus return to competitive
golf, playing in
Savannah with Gary Player and delighting long time fans. Player
invited Nicklaus to join him in Savannah in the special Demaret division for
players age 70 and older. The two-man teams compete in a batter-ball format of
scoring that evens the playing field for some of the pioneers in the game of
golf. With the sun shining down on Tuesday April 23 Nicklaus and Player drew a
large crowd of followers as they played 18 holes at The Club on Savannah
Harbor, which is located just behind the Westin Hotel on Hutchison Island. It
was real fun to see Nicklaus and Player hit their tee shots right down the
middle of the fairway using swings that have stood the test of time. Each of
them are past Masters Champions and great ambassadors for the game of golf. On
this day, they were not able to take the top spot on the leaderboard, but they
were able to command the attention of all the golf fans as they read putts for
one another and showed how teamwork can be applied in the game of golf.
