Abbeville Opera House - Old 96 District

Entrance to History and the Arts.
The historic Abbeville Opera House was built in 1908 since the county seat was a stopover for railroad travelers between New York and the South. The building was designed by Edwards and Walter of Atlanta, and October 10, 1908 marked the inaugural performance. After a long run, the Opera House closed in the 1950's but was renovated and re-opened in 1968 and is still home today to a diverse presentation of the performing arts. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Wonderful theatre for the public to enjoy.
A striking red brick opera house.
Home to plays, musicals and more.
The opportunity to attend the play Dial M for Murder on June 24 was met with vigor, as a follow up to the amazing Spoleto Arts festival in Charleston. Our boxed seats provided a great view of the stage, but also of the three-tiered opera house in its full splendor. What a wonderful theatre for those interested in carrying on a great legacy of entertainment for the Old 96 District. The principle actors turned in long dialogues which signaled to attendees that they were serious in their craft, and they deserved the large ovation that followed their performance.

Guide to Abbeville Square.
Stepping outside after the performance, an evening walk around the Abbeville square seems prudent to go over once again what other historic gems reside in this small Southern town.
