To say that there is a wide variety of plant life in the 27,000-acre
Congaree National Park would be an understatement the size of a grand cypress tree stump hole. The park is home to state champion trees and also to national champion trees, and the mature shaded understory is a perfect place for biodiversity at the ground level. I was on a guided walk with field experts that could not only locate, but also identify some of the plants we encountered along the boardwalk trail. One stalk through the Congaree is certainly never enough, and the semi-dry conditions we experienced in Fall, may soon change into a fully flooded swamp over the winter which offers entirely different viewing.
