2026 Birding Journal Observations - September / October

Red-Tailed Hawk in Live Oak Tree Oct. 24

Dry weather continued to be a theme for the Lowcountry in September and October. The forecasted Super El Nino is nowhere to be seen yet! The Fall migration began with the arrival of Baltimore orioles, and lots of small yellow warblers, capped off by a flurry or rose-breasted grosbeaks passing through. Eventually by the end of October I saw my neotropical migrants of summer all leave including painted bunting, blue grosbeak and summer tanager - See Yall again in Spring!

2026 Cancer Awareness with Bajio Sungalsses and Share Our Suzy

Rigolets Frames with Dynamic Tarpon Artistry

October is the official month of Breast Cancer Awareness, even though Lowcountry Outdoors promotes such efforts in other months too like the Edisto Belles and the Ladies Billfish Classic. Already in October I attended a meeting that donated proceeds towards Share Our Suzy and made a visit to MUSC to capture the Pink Lighting they employ all month long. And when our friends at Bajio Sunglasses chose two of their popular frames to benefit the Casting For Recovery fishing program, they caught the attention of this lifelong angler who wishes them every success!!

2026 Birding Journal Observations - July / August

Yellow Crowned Night Heron on July 5

Prolonged drought remained the headline for the Lowcountry throughout the entire calendar year of 2026 with little relief coming from the afternoon thunderstorms and tropical systems of a more typical annual weather pattern. Placing fresh water in bird baths, especially during times of high heat index values, is a great way to befriend your backyard birds in order to help them cool down. Depsite these climactic conditions there was no real change to the summer bird line up including blue grosbeak, painted bunting and summer tanager. And ruby-throated hummingbird activity peaked in July and August.

2026 Birding Journal Observations - May / June

Swallow-tailed Kite from June 5

A prolonged and severe drought continued to grip the Lowcountry, while the Midlands and Upstate received some relief via a return to regular precipitation rated. The arid outdoor conditions presents an opportunity for birders to create bird friendly yards where fresh water is offered daily, or every other day.

2026 S.C. Mahi Awards - Team Lil' Hooker Wins

Jon Cameron, Chad Reese and Capt. John Rypczyk

Congrats to Team Lil' Hooker out of Murrell's Inlet for winning the 2026 S.C. Mahi Series.  Capt. John Rypczyk, Jon Cameron and Chad Reese fished on a brand new 36-foot Yellowfin boat with triple Yamaha 350's and won their inaugural tourney. Their very first fish caught in the new boat came on Day One of their fish days on May 4 when a 38-pound mahi hit the deck at 6:26 AM and it ended up counting towards their winning two-fish aggregate. On their Day Two of fishing on May 20 they added a 48.6-pound stud mahi to their tally - and it ended up being good enough for First Place, They had a slick calm ocean on both days but on the second day Cameron did not get a textbook gaff on the big bull dolphin and it nearly got away right beside the boat. Luckily they can laugh about that twist of fate all the way to the bank today!

2026 Yemassee - Audubon Christmas Bird Count

Birders in the pine savannah

The weather on Sunday January 4, 2026 was cold and clear, and a great day for birding. We began by dawn's early light watching for wood ducks and saw several hundred woodies. At the end of the day we visited a private impoundment and were delighted to see thousands of wood ducks. Whoopee!

2026 Edisto Island - Christmas Bird Count

Beach Birding

It was another cold way to start the New Year - but always a worthwhile endeavor to support Audubon and simply to gather together with like-minded friends in the pre-dawn for a full day of birding along the magical coastal edge of Edisto Island.

2025 Birding Journal Observations - November / December

Hooded mergansers on New Year's Eve

Warm and dry conditions translated into incipient drought by Thanksgiving and into the New Year. Anytime it gets dry a bird bath or water source can be an excellent place to watch for birds. No significant changes in migration were evident though, and seasonal sightings continued on par heading into the Christmas Bird Count season.
