Great-looking trophies for Alice Kelly winners!
The 24th annual Lady Anglers tourney, named after Alice Kelly, was fished on August 11 out of Manteo under sunny and clam conditions. In stark contrast, the Captain's meeting on Saturday night was a memorable one for the squall that pushed through, flattening the cooking tent and dumping torrents of rain. It's a good thing that the Pirate's Cove marina facilities include a great hall for hosting such gatherings! The Alice Kelly tourney kicks off the week-long events at the Pirates Cove Billfish tourney, and is a day to let the assembled fleet get in some practice fishing, while letting the ladies take over as the top competitor's for the day. Fortunate to be fishing with Bubba Simmons aboard the Arica, a 57-foot Blackwell, his wife released a grey-hounding sailfish to make her mark on the fun day of fishing - Congrats! Back in port, the 59-boat fleet reported mainly slow fishing with a few white marlin and sailfish released. The Manteo-based 'Sniper' took the top boat honors with their one blue marlin release and three sailfish releases. In second place was Bi-Op-Sea with three sailfish, and in third place was Retriever. The top lady angler honors went to Anne Reibel fishing aboard the Samanna. The top tuna honors went to Kim Sink for her 49.2-pound catch from Country Girl. Heaviest dolphin went to Lisa Martone for her 36.1-pound mahi, and largest wahoo goes to Elizabeth Grigg from Rigged Up for her 32.6-pounder.
