The third annual deer banquet on August 1 at the Shriner's Temple in Mount Pleasant was a big success. The Branch committee members and volunteers did a good job of providing another quality experience, and put a renewed focus on deer management for the 2013 season. Deer season opens on August 15! In 2012 the Lowcountry Branch provided 3500-pounds of venison to soup kitchens and the needy. These volunteers also conducted a youth hunt in the Lowcountry, and they are committed to education and to a membership drive to honor the 25th Anniversary of QDMA organization, founded here in the Lowcountry by Joe Hamilton. Did you know that Lowcountry outdoors sat in on some of the first ever QDMA meetings, when the sole branch was located in Colleton County? Plenty of sponsors and donors attended the banquet to bid on silent auction items, buy raffle tickets and eat food from Charleston Bay Gourmet. Live auction items included a deer hunt to Echaw plantation, a dove hunt to Argentina, the filming of a hog hunt, equipment rentals and more. Overall, the banquet raised plenty of funds, and allowed deer managers to compare notes about how everyone is coping with their wet woodlands this year. The good news is that fawn production appears to be up, and that the forecast for a productive deer season is favorable. Good Luck hunting.
