2016 Inaugural Volvo Car Open - Finals / Sloan Stephens Wins

Sloan Stephens smiles at All Access Day
of the Inaugural Volvo Car Open
During the 1 p.m. match on Volvo stadium court it was American Sloan Stephens who defeated Russian Elena Vesnina in straight sets. This was Stephens sixth appearance at the Charleston-based tennis tournament and her first time reaching the finals. The weather was cool and blustery during the finals match.

Stephens was up early in the first set before Vesnina was able to level the set at 6 game all. A high level of tennis ensued during the tiebreaker that saw Stephens take control of the match, winning the first set. The second set came much easier and quicker for Stephens, making her the first American to win here since 2013.

The ladies double champions for 2016 are Kristina Mladenovic and Caroline Garcia.

This was the 44th edition of this tournament but the first played under the name of Volvo Car Open. And fittingly, Volvo gave the winner a new car as a special show of support for their first champion!!
