2016 Inaugural Volvo Car Open - First Round / Main Draw

Venus Williams brought her dog Harold to town - Cute!
Monday morning at 10 a.m. marked the start of the Main Draw of tennis play at the Inaugural Volvo Car Open on Daniel Island. Spectacular 'chamber of commerce' weather allowed for a cool morning before a real warm up by noontime. Not all of the top seeds were playing on Monday, but they were all present for public practice sessions and to attend the WTA All Access Hour with media.

Mladenovic reaches up for a big serve
The first tourney match at the Volvo Car Stadium Court was on Monday morning and Spain's Lourdes Dominguez Lino needed three sets to defeat American Christina McHale. The powerful Spaniard played baseline tennis and looks like she could be heading for more success. The first match of the day on the Althea Gibson court saw Kristina Mladenovic of France defeat Tatjana Maria of Germany in straight sets in just over an hour and a half. On Court 4 it was Mirjana Lucic-Baroni of Croatia easily beating China's Shuai Peng in straight sets and one hour and ten minutes. On Court 3 Kateryna Bondarenko of Ukraine dispatched Japan's Misaki Doi coming from behind to win the second and third sets.
