2016 Inaugural Volvo Car Open - Thursday Tennis

Yulia Putintseva pushes up some clay on a groundstroke
Great weather and great tennis marked the Thursday play at the Volvo Car Open which began at 11 a.m. on stadium court. The Champion from 2015 Angelique Kerber defeated Kristina Kucova to stay on track in her title defense on Daniel Island. On the Althea Gibson court it was Vesnina defeating Dominquez Lino in convincing fashion.

Kerber had to dig for several shots during a tough match
To me the match up of the day was USA's Venus Williams, the No. 3 seed and a veteran WTA player, versus up and coming Yulia Putintseva. Williams has a taller build than the stout Russian player, but from what I have seen Putintseva has played the best tennis all week at the 2016 VCO. So while some may have been surprised that Williams lost the match in three sets, my only thoughts are if Putintseva will run out of gas before Sunday's finals. It's going to be a great weekend of tennis!
