Folly Pier Fishing Challenge during Red October

Bull Redfish landed and released on Oct. 6

One often hears that some of the best fishing of the year occurs in the fall, and in particular the bull redfish own the month of October - making it a 'Red October.' Visiting the Folly Beach Pier on Saturday and Sunday I found the bite to be going strong right now along the beach. Besides seeing a bull redfish being landed and released, other anglers caught and kept a king mackerel, a spanish mackerel, a jack crevalle, spotted seatrout, whiting, and many sharks - WOW! Live-lining a small bait is the number one lure off the pier right now, but cut bait or frozen shrimp will also work. On Saturday I witnessed large schools of menhaden stacked up all around the pier in clean 'king green' water. An additional incentive to fish the Pier occurs during each Sunday in October, with the Pier partnering with Haddrell's Point West for a Pier Challenge. Anglers must register with Dee at Haddrell's Point West anytime PRIOR to Sunday and any fish they keep will be weighed by Pier staff and recorded on a weigh-in sheet. Simply return that sheet to Dee on Monday or Tuesday, and Wednesday of each week Dee will provide a weekly prize for the angler with the highest weight total. One fish qualifies your entry, but a five fish aggregate weight using your heaviest fish is also allowed, which seems like the best way to go.
