2021 Birding Journal Observations - July / August

Carolina Chickadee in a Pine Tree
The climatological tale of these two months was somewhat varied in 2021, in that we had more tropical moisture in July and August in 2021 than normal. Wet weather ponds around the Lowcountry are now replenished heading into Fall, and it wouldn't be hard to forecast a wet winter ahead. But who knows? As usual, the birding world stayed the course during these two summer months and sightings were steady and regular. Whenever the neotropical migratory songbirds will depart is likely tied to passing weather systems, but over the summer months I had frequent visits to feeders from summer tanager, blue grosbeak, painted bunting and ruby-throated hummingbirds.

Other birds in my yard flock include blue jay, bluebird, brown thrasher, white-breasted nuthatch, cardinal, red-headed woodpecker, red-bellied woodpecker, downy woodpecker, yellow-shatter flicker, cuckoo, brown-headed cowbird, crow and Carolina chickadee.
