148 Red Knots in a flock on Harbor Island |
Piping Plover with orange leg flag on upper left leg |
After crossing an expansive sand dune complex running from the condos to the beach, we gazed across a small gully on the beach to see a flock of shorebirds. It did not take long for them to pick up, and take flight, and leave the area but not before being identified as Red Knots! These birds are being studied now, and are massing at Kiawah Island each year, and sightings like this one are reported up the chain of command. Next up was a FIRST for me spotting a Piping Plover with a leg band on it. This bird can be identified by the color of the leg band (orange) and that information is also reported. The beach walk continued with Whimbrel, Godwit, Great Blue Heron, Bald Eagle and many more and then finished strong with a pair of Wilson's Plovers likely nesting in a section of dunes marked off 'For Shorebirds Only.'
