2011 S.C. Alligator Hunting Applications Begin

May 1 marks the beginning of the online application process for alligator tags through SCDNR. The 2011 alligator season will run from September 11 until October 9. One thousand permits are available this year for $100 apiece. Random computerized drawings will determine which applicants are successful, and they can choose from one of the four management units located in the coastal plain. Alligators must have reached a minimum size of four-feet before being fitted with an SCDNR harvest tag. Last year hunters took 452 alligators during the public gator hunting season with the average size running about 9.5-feet in length. Some considerations for successful applicants might be where to look for help for a gator guide, and who might handle the processing and taxidermy. Red Bluff Lodge in Allendale offers a guiding service for the Savannah River area and has years of experience as a licensed 'nuisance gator' operation.
