2012 Leukemia Cup Regatta / Banquet

Stars and Bars on a Burgee
Cheers to the Hamilton's
The 2012 Leukemia Cup Regatta fleet of 24-boats sailed on September 29, but with little to no wind. One race was started but not completed, and a second race was abandoned due to the doldrums. As a fundraising mechanism for the South Carolina Chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, the emphasis after  racing was on the banquet and auction at the Omar Shrine Temple. A large crowd of sailing enthusiasts gather and use this event as a sort of 'end of sailing season' event. For instance the Wednesday afternoon 'beer races' are suspended for winter, etc. A wonderful smorgasbord of food was provided under the header of 'Cooking up a Cure.' Harbor Breeze at Bridgeside provided Caribbean conch fritters, Lowcountry Eats provided boiled peanuts and asparagus, Carters Kitchen provided wild mushroom bread pudding with duck confit, Cesca provided Tuscan farro salad, SNOB provided lamb ravioli and Fleet Landing provided Crab bruschette. Enough food to sink a ship!! Of course, what sailing event is complete without a bit of Mount Gay rum and grog to wash everything down. This event has raised 1.6-million dollars since their efforts began 15 years ago. Look for more of my social photos in the Out and About section of the Charleston Mercury.

Penn and Ben Hagood are always supportive of this cause
