Monic Puig prepares to compete against Venus Williams |
The first round of play saw the top seeds at the 2013 Family Circle Cup advance to play again in the second round. The final match of fourth-seed Venus Williams took place during the night match at 7 p.m. on Tuesday evening. With a cold front settling in the stadium court experienced a north wind that made it jacket and blanket weather all of a sudden, after several warm and sunny afternoons on Daniel Island. Adversary Monica Puig put up a great fight, and actually took the second set from Venus, but in the end it she lost two sets to one. The crowd cheered Venus on as she showed signs of producing some explosive play with her powerful ground strokes and long reach. Scheduled to play again in Wednesday (if weather permits), Venus may face a test of her stamina in back-to-back matches. Tuesday night was also Military Appreciation night with the Meredith Corporation providing free admission to members of our armed forces. A special presentation by an honor guard preceeded the night matches, which also included a double match. Each day at the FCC the level of competition increases and Charlestonians will be reminded how this tournament is a great addition to the outdoors culture that many in the Lowcountry profess is the best anywhere.
