2013 Criterium Cycling Race - Speed Week

Pro women's race start in Walterboro
The annual cycling event that comes racing down Washington Street in downtown Walterboro celebrated eleven years of success. On Wednesday May 1 five classes of cycling racers competed in the  USA Criterium Speed Week in the Lowcountry. Beginning in Georgia, racing at Tybee Island, and then competing in South Carolina - speed week ends after a series of back-to-back races. It was good fortune to draw a good weather day with no rain for the Walterboro Criterium, although the crowd gallery seemed smaller compared to past years. The recent beautification project in downtown Walterboro changed the composition of the race course a small amount, but the 2013 race proved that these cycling pros can handle jut about any terrain placed in their path. The cyclists peddle around an oval track and a pace car leads the way, kind of like a slow-mo Nascar race I suppose. It gives citizens the chance to enjoy an afternoon in the city of Walterboro, which allows tailgating and food tables on its sidewalks, and hosts a VIP tent for those seeking a barbecue meal and refreshments. Competitive cycling is another way to enjoy our Lowcountry Outdoors!
