The ninth annual Island Sportsman’s Club inshore fishing tourney took place on Saturday October 5 under sunny and breezy conditions. This is the second year using a fall date on the calendar, and they profess that this allows them to reach out to the serious anglers of the Lowcountry. Meaning, they want to provide this competition for the ones who won’t be going to a football game or sitting in a tree stand since they’d rather be fishing. With about 100 anglers of this caliber signed up, the competition was tough. Five main categories for red drum, trout, sheepshead, flounder and king mackerel were complimented by redfish with most spots and heaviest inshore slam. Angler Chris Mitchell took first place redfish for his 4.85-pounder. Missy Robert took second place with his 4.45-pounder. Randy Robbins took home the top prize for trout with his 3.40-pound speck, while Brandon Riley took second and third place trout. Riley wasn’t done though, racking up a sweep of the flounder division including a doormat that weighed 5.7-pounds. It’s no surprise that his big flounder helped him to capture the Inshore Slam title as well – Congrats! In the sheepshead division there was a clash of the titans between Lonnie East and Bruce Humbert, with Humbert coming out on top with his 7.2-pound sheepie! A 24-pound king mackerel won first place for angler Christie Hensley, and she and her husband Dennis weighed in three nice kings, propelling her to win best female angler. The youth angler award went to J. Cronin, while most spots on a redfish went to Lonnie Cowart for a fish with 11-spots. The “I wasn’t even fishing for that” fish of the day goes to Pete Ferrara for his 23.5-pound gag grouper that hit a ribbonfish while king mackerel fishing aboard Like2Fish – Bon Appetite!
