Blue-winged teal by Jon Ren at 2012 SEWE |
The featured artist for the 2012 SouthEastern Wildlife Expo graced the early bird crowd at the opening reception, featuring a game feast and great artwork. Dustin Van Wechel is from Gilbert, Arizona and he told me that this was his 8th visit to SEWE, and that he has a large painting for sale at Charleston Place of two moose. His oil painting of two tundra swans was on display Wednesday night and patrons swooned at the realism of that piece - and I was able to chime in that tundra swans visit the Lowcountry outdoors each year at Bear Island WMA. The VIP's ate Charleston crab dip, crab cakes, grilled quail legs, wild boar on cheddar biscuits, duck sausage, tomato basil sips and viewed a dessert table that was picture perfect including a cupcake topped with an edible flower! Artist Carol Joy Shannon's "Lookin' over the Lowcountry" depicts a great white egret overlooking a creek and was a fitting selection for the SEWE event that welcomes artists and patrons to Charleston.
