The 16th year of the Fifty-Fifty offshore tournament for dolphin and wahoo was fished out of Toler's Cove marina on June 2. The fifteen boat fleet did a great job of bringing lots of mahi back to the scales, but only two wahoo were weighed-in - including a 58.8-pound stud caught by 14-year old Matthew Nettles about the Short People. Taking second with the other wahoo was Phillip Dixon, fishing from Phat Cat with his 32.4-pound Hoo! Ocean conditions were reported to be rough in the morning after a front that passed the night before, but calm seas came quickly allowing for a good afternoon dolphin bite and a smoothe ride home. Legare Jones won the dolphin competition with his 25.6-pound mahi caught while fishing for Team Sea Fox - and Michael Collins and crew have a great story to tell about their catch. Hunter Watson edged into second place for JuncaNewt with his 25.4-pound mahi. Summer Girl's Carson Jackson took third place with her 24.6-pound dolphin, which also counted as the top youth angler award. Taking the Lady angler honors were Diana Lackey from Wildlife with her 16.8-pound mahi, and second place Lady angler was Carson Lunceford with her 14.2-pound mahi caught from Salty Dog. The inshore division in the
Fifty-Fifty was canceled for 2012, and the Petrel billfish release division went to Dem Boys for their their release of one sailfish. The CCA-sponsored conservation award for dolphin releases went to Summer Girl with 6 mahi caught and released.
