Bacon-wrapped doves are delicious |
Saturday October 8th was the last day of the first part of the three-section dove season. My dilemma was that despite attending a handful of dive hunts already, I had not been in the presence of enough doves to harvest a full limit of 15. When the phone rang on that Friday to ask if I could get to Canadys in the morning for a 'last chance' dove shoot - I said well sure. We were deployed into the field by legal shooting time and my dove-shoot 'dues' must have been paid in full because I made the most of my shots, including two doubles, and gathered my limit by 8:30 - when I unloaded my gun and exited the field. A big breakfast followed the hunt, and then most of the sportsmen scattered to go watch football games, complete honey-do lists or just enjoy the rest of their day. I cleaned my doves and enjoyed them wrapped in thick-sliced bacon and served them with a beautiful orange sweet potato.
