Lady anglers and their Fifty-Fifty mahi mahi |
The 2013 Fifty-Fifty offshore tourney was fished out of Toler's Cove on June 1, under light winds and sunny skies. Over 30-boats competed in the dolphin or wahoo competition, with several of the boats electing to compete in the Petrel division for billfish releases. SCDNR plays a role in the Fifity-Fifty, providing tags to be used on juvenile dolphin that are released. At the scales, one big bull mahi stood out from the rest when Brian Morros weighed-in his 53.6-pounder caught from Wildlife - good for the top spot at the Fifty-Fifty. The second place dolphin weighed 33.4-pounds and was caught by Bob McClam aboard Mister Pete. The top wahoo weighed 29.6-pounds and was brought to the dock by Jeff Scott, fishing from Fish Whistle. The second place wahoo was a 21.4-pounder caught by Michael Krivohlavek about the Daymaker. The boat called Knock Down won the Winner Take All category for a dolphin weighing 15.4-pounds on the nose. The first place for billfish went to Split Bill for two blue marlin released. Second place went to Syked Out for one blue marlin release and one white marlin release. Third place goes to Jabez for releasing one blue marlin. The SplitBill was the beneficiary of good sportsmanship from other boat owners who gave them the benefit of the doubt after returning to the docks late, having been delayed by a late afternoon bite and lengthy fight on their second blue marlin. Mister Pete also released a blue marlin during the Fifty-Fifty.

Wow! Amazing catch. I want to catch one of those someday. For now I'm learning how to catch fish in such a good fishing place.
