Dockhands welcome sportfisher to fuel dock |
In what is usually a routine February newsletter to announce
the series dates for the upcoming year of Governor’s Cup Fishing Tournaments, a
glaring development came to light. There are no dates listed for the 2015
Governor’s Cup at Edisto Marina, yet there is no explanation given. The
newsletter’s release via email on late Friday afternoon came as a shock to many
who look forward to and love this annual summertime event.

A
quick check of the Edisto Marina FaceBook page shows an outpouring of comments
on these current events. Administrative postings to the Edisto Marina FaceBook
page include a message from Buddy Smith stating that he was unable to negotiate
a lease renewal to run the ships store and fuel dock at Edisto Marina for 2015.
Their latest posting on March 1 states that despite multiple attempts to
negotiate an agreement for this year’s tournament, there will be no Edisto
Marina Governor’s Cup this year.
Like many others, the Edisto Marina Governor’s Cup weekend is a pre-planned component of summer, and I suspect some have already made beach house rental reservations around those dates. Having the Governor’s Cup fleet of sportfishers come to town, each bringing their families to Edisto Beach, is an economic driver that will be absent this year. Edisto Beach is resilient and thriving community in summer, but they will miss out on the drama that goes along with being the deciding event in the billfishing series.
