Plaque on the SCWF forestry award |
The annual awards banquet of the South Carolina Wildlife Federation was held February 1 at the new State Farmer's Market building in Lexington. Winners in multiple categories of conservation were awarded, and the forestry award went to White Oak Forestry. For a rundown of all the winners at the SCWF awards click
here. The SCWF description for the forestry winner
states - "White Oak Forest Company (a subsidiary of Evening Post Publishing Company) owns 15,000 acres of forestland in Georgetown and Charleston counties. The company has worked closely with organizations including the Jones Ecological Research Center, The Nature Conservancy and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on conservation projects including replanting Longleaf Pines and establishing protected areas for Red-cockaded Woodpeckers. The company’s lands are leased for recreational hunting, and hunters are invited to wildlife management reviews. White Oak harvests timber using sustainable standards and in strict accordance with S.C. Best Management Practices." Furthermore, it was revealed at the awards banquet that the nominator said "White Oak Forestry is respectful of the land, and they consider the long-term ramifications of their management decisions." White Oak Forestry is also setting a high standard for other private landowners of the Lowcountry to follow. The practice of prescribed fire, hunting deer and all manner of outdoor traditions are a way of life at White Oak Forestry, which is led by Mike Prevost. Fortunate to be on this property doing some research on wild hogs, I was able to witness a majestic sight when several bald eagles passed near to my tree stand. From bald eagles to the ubiquitous field mouse, I suspect they are all part of the management plans drawn up at White Oak Forestry. Congrats!
