Cantey Smith and Dixie award the winner's trophy |
The 18th Annual Tarpon Release Tournament, fished out of Toler's Cove Marina on July 7. Hot weather is truly tarpon weather and 67 anglers were greeted with heatwave conditions, from the time of the Captain's Meeting on Thursday all the way through the day's fishing. The 2012 edition of the tourney produced another winner, when Capt. Shane Sinclair hooked up with a tarpon at noon and then was able to get the snap swivel to the rod tip, for an official release. Anglers were asked NOT to lip gaff any tarpon or to lift them into the boat - in a nod towards conservation and caring for these great game fish. Organizer Cantey Smith demands zero tarpon mortality rates, and wants to raise awareness about releasing the fish in the best possible condition. The handsome wooden trophy with the depiction of a tarpon and two shrimp is a unique trophy for the 2012 winner.

If " Anglers were asked NOT to lip gaff any tarpon or to lift them into the boat - in a nod towards conservation and caring for these great game fish," why post a picture showing a lip gaff????
ReplyDeleteI don't see a gaff in the picture, do you?
